SPOW RANKS (UPDATED 7/30/22)

Here are the updated Speed/Power MiLB Ranks for the week ending 7/30/22. Our Universe this time around were players 27 and under, with 199 minimum Plate Appearances which gave us a world of 1083 players. From that world, here are the top 7% (74 players) who, this year, have demonstrated the right blend of speed and power.

Typically, we are looking for a .400 minimum wOBA and 5.6 minimum Spd grade (5.5 is seen as "avg" speed). However, an increase in speed can reduce the wOBA minimum cut-off (i.e. the more dangerous the player is on the basepath, the less we'll hold him to the power numbers), such that a 6.0 Spd and .385 wOBA will qualify, as will: 7.5/ .375; 9.0/.360.

A final three notes: 1) This ranking devalues K's (you can't hit HRs or steal bases/hit triples/score runs if you strike out). 2) We value the higher minors over A ball (so players with higher wOBA at the higher levels have higher scores, while high K rates at lower levels hurt a players score even more). 3) Some of the guys having great years may not have had great careers up to now (that is especially the case for guys aged 27 who are still in the minors or just promoted), so its up to you how much weight you put on the most current year (that is, whether its an anomaly or whether the player has simply finally figured it out).
